Peat Moss

peat moss is made up of the decomposing parts of the sphagnum moss that is commonly found in a peat bog. It is highly prized by gardeners who live in dry areas for use in their garden as it can hold up to 20 times its weight in water. On top of this it is also very acidic and can be used to reduce the pH level of the soil. Gardeners use lots of peat moss around plants that need plenty of water in order to flourish in dry environments. There are many uses for peat moss in the garden and around the home. You can add it to your lawn where it will help to promote much healthier root growth.

This kind of root growth will provide you with a lush lawn that will make your neighbors jealous. The most common use however, is in the garden where adding an inch to the soil to help lower the pH and keep the soil far moister without having to spend so much time running the sprinklers. If you have a compost pile you can add an inch of peat moss for every 4 inches of compostable material. Because compost relies on a mixture of air and water in order for the microbial action that creates the compost to occur, adding the peat will help to keep the moisture level higher and increase the pH which promotes the composting process.

If the pH level becomes too low the compost pile will become inactive and you will left with rotting mess. peat moss is also perfect for use when transplanting young plants, you should add about an inch to the bottom of the hole before you set the plant in it. This will help keep the roots of the new plant moist and help it to get a good start. One thing that most people fail to realize is that peat can take many years to decompose and as such it will provide a long term source of nutrients for your young plants helping them to become well established. In most cases the peat moss you buy in the stores has been sterilize to ensure that there are no microorganisms in it. Often it will be screened to remove things like twigs and rocks so that all you get is the product you are paying for.

You can buy it in different sized bags or in compressed bales depending on how much you need. If you are looking for a reliable source of peat moss you will find that AgSolutions Inc. offers two different blends. They have a Western Black Peat that is blend of Irish Black and Canadian Sphagnum and can be purchased with or without sugar beet lime. They also a premium Canadian Sphagnum peat moss that is a blonde peat with superb fiber and structure. These products are also available in custom blends and in a variety of different sized packages to suit your needs. You can also buy sugar beet lime to help improve the quality of your soil.
